You Heard Every Word. You Just Did Not Get the Sentence.

The moment that makes you doubt your English is rarely a hard sentence. It is the one where every word is easy and the meaning still will not arrive. “Let me give you a heads-up” — you know heads, you know up, and you have no idea what was just said. “I’m beat” is not about being defeated, “no worries” is not reassurance but simply “that’s fine”, and “let’s circle back” at the end of a meeting has nothing to do with circles. These chunks, whose meaning refuses to come from adding up the words, occupy a large share of real conversation. Say English offers video lessons, quizzes, read-aloud practice and dubbing. For speaking practice, choose one of six conversation characters and answer its prepared questions in English. You can start with a free written level test and guidance in eight languages. The materials draw on Huston English Academy’s own textbooks and 26-year tradition, dating from its founding in 2000. Read sentences aloud in read-aloud practice, and try speaking along with the video in dubbing practice. When a question appears, prepare your own answer using expressions you know. When reviewing on your own, write down expressions you want to revisit and read the same sentence aloud again. Choose a practice length and time that fit your schedule.
