You Should Not Have to Pay for English With Your First Language

Would it be better to speak only English at home? It is the question we hear most often from parents. The impulse is understandable: afraid the English will come too slowly, a family pushes away the language its child speaks most easily. But the direction of language education in 2026 has been settling on English-plus rather than English-instead, for two reasons. The first is practical. English is valuable in the world because it connects you to people who speak other languages, and a bridge is only a bridge if both ends are standing. The second is about learning itself. The concepts a learner already holds in a first language — time, cause, hypothesis, metaphor — are not learned again in English; they transfer. Thin out the language those concepts live in and you have simply reduced what there is to carry across. We protect this with the interface, not with theory. Every menu, explanation and prompt in Say Global English exists simultaneously in Korean, Japanese, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Spanish, Thai and Indonesian. Nobody has to endure English in order to understand the instructions. You understand in your own language and you practise in English. The 1:1 sessions with the six AI tutors run in English, and your first language steps in only when you are stuck — it opens the road and withdraws, rather than translating for you. For multilingual households, families living abroad and families preparing to emigrate, this is where paths diverge. If the language in which a parent can say things most precisely disappears from the home, the child gains English and loses the finer half of what their parents mean. That trade is not required. Progress, scores and streaks are stored on your account, so what you start on your phone continues on a computer, and changing the display language never touches your learning history. Twenty-six years of classrooms taught us something simple: a learner whose own language is respected flinches less in front of a new one.
