Turn off translated subtitles and let English subtitles link sound to words
Many people say they study English with videos, but if subtitles in their own language are on, much of that time is spent reading their own language. While the eyes follow the translation, the ears let the English sound slip past. Language research has reported that when people listened to an unfamiliar English accent, English subtitles helped them understand the sounds while subtitles in their own language did not. English subtitles are a bridge that says "so that sound was this word." Try this order. Watch a short scene with English subtitles and match sound to text, pause after each sentence and repeat it aloud, then turn the subtitles off and listen again. Each sentence you can follow without subtitles is real listening progress. For twenty-six years, since 2000, Huston has taught English through English with no Korean in class. In each 25-minute 1:1 lesson we keep the same order: hear the sound first instead of a translation, repeat it, then say it yourself. Listening grows at a different pace for everyone and we cannot promise results, but changing the subtitle language on today’s video is something you can do right now.
