Aim at a score and you stop. Aim at a person and you keep going.

Ask someone why they quit English and most say they got busy. That same person never misses an episode of the show they love. The problem is not time; it is the kind of goal. A score is a goal that ends when you reach it, and when it ends, so does the reason. An identity does not end: the person who finishes their own point in a meeting, the parent who calmly explains a child's symptoms in a foreign hospital, the traveler who speaks first in an unfamiliar city.
