The Power to Read a Word You Have Never Seen

Memorising whole words has a ceiling. You read as far as the words you have learned, then you stop at the next line. Phonics removes that ceiling: when a is [æ] and when it is [ei], what sh, ch and th actually sound like, why a silent e at the end changes the vowel before it. There are only about forty rules, and once you hold them you can say a word you have never seen. But rules learned on their own are gone in three weeks. The moment you learn a sound you need something to read with it.
