Getting Past English That Only Goes as Far as You Prepared

Most learners stall at the same place. Introductions, ordering food, asking for directions — the prepared situations are fluent. Then someone asks one question that is not in the script and the sentences vanish. It is not a lack of ability. What you practised was sentence recall; what a real conversation demands is spontaneous production. They are different skills, and the second one only grows if you train it directly. Spontaneous production needs three things at once. First, you hold language in chunks rather than whole memorised sentences. Second, you start with the words you already have instead of waiting for a perfect sentence — native speakers repair their sentences while speaking, too. Third, you have something to say when you get stuck, so the gap is not silence: what I mean is, how do I put it, the exact word escapes me.
