Phonics is the foundation of reading English. How to learn the 44 English sounds systematically, and how children and adults should approach it differently.

1What is phonics? The decoding code of English reading

Phonics is the study of how letters relate to sounds. English has 26 letters but 44 distinct sounds (phonemes). Master phonics and you can pronounce a word you have never seen before. The idea resembles the Korean consonant-vowel system, but English carries far more irregularity.

2A step-by-step phonics curriculum

① single consonants (b, c, d, f…) → ② short vowels (a, e, i, o, u) → ③ consonant blends (bl, cr, str…) → ④ vowel digraphs (ai, ea, ou…) → ⑤ silent-letter rules (knife, write…) → ⑥ special patterns (-tion, -ight…). At every step, enough exposure and enough repetition is the whole game.

3Phonics for children vs. phonics for adults

Children aged five to eight imitate sound remarkably well, so songs and chants let them pick it up naturally. Adults get there faster by first understanding exactly how English differs from their own sound system, then drilling deliberately. F/P, R/L and V/B in particular need conscious practice.

1Why is speaking English so hard?

Almost every Korean learner says the same thing: reading and writing are fine, speaking is not. There is one reason — sheer lack of speaking practice. Acquisition research (Krashen's input hypothesis) says speaking ability is built from comprehensible input plus enough output practice.

2The 30-day plan, week by week

Week 1: three sentences a day with the AI — short is fine. Week 2: pick one topic (food, weather, hobbies) and hold a ten-sentence exchange. Week 3: train yourself not to stop when you make a mistake — fluency before accuracy. Week 4: the five-minute speaking challenge — set a timer and talk to yourself in English.

3Designing the ten-minute daily routine

1 minute: read today's word aloud → 3 minutes: the daily challenge quiz → 5 minutes: a short conversation with an AI teacher → 1 minute: write today's expression in your journal. Thirty days of these ten minutes is what gives you the moment when English simply comes out of your mouth.

1Why ages 7 to 12 matter

Neuroscience of language points to ages seven to twelve as the golden window. Children who get enough English exposure in this period pick up pronunciation and grammatical intuition five to ten times faster than adults. That does not mean an English-only kindergarten is automatically the answer.

2Five things to do at home

① Twenty minutes a day of English cartoons or videos — start from what they enjoy. ② Sing along to English nursery rhymes — rhythm carries pronunciation. ③ Read English picture books aloud — story gives context. ④ Three conversations a week with an AI teacher — real dialogue practice. ⑤ Word games — board and card games make remembering stress-free.

1Business English vs. everyday English

Business English has to be formal and precise, but too stiff and the relationship turns awkward. "I'd like to…" sounds more professional than "I want…", and "Could you possibly…?" is more courteous than "Can you?". A difference in nuance can close a deal — or lose one.

2Ten email patterns you cannot skip

"I hope this email finds you well." (greeting) / "I am writing to inquire about…" (enquiry) / "Please find attached…" (attachment) / "I look forward to hearing from you." (awaiting a reply) / "Thank you for your prompt response." (thanks for a quick reply) — memorise these five and your email already reads as professional.

3Survival patterns for meetings

1The Ebbinghaus forgetting curve

Ebbinghaus showed in 1885 that we forget about 70% of what we have just learned within 24 hours. Review it four or five times at spaced intervals, however, and it moves into long-term memory. That is the heart of the Spaced Repetition System (SRS).

2The optimal review intervals

After 1 day → 3 days → 7 days → 21 days → 60 days. Those five reviews are enough to settle a word firmly into long-term memory. The Say English review-card system runs on exactly this schedule.

3Combine it with speaking and the effect triples

Reading a word aloud, saying it in a sentence and adding a gesture beats looking at it — memory efficiency roughly triples (multi-channel learning). That is the scientific basis of WBT, Whole Brain Teaching.
